Volunteer Income Tax preparation
Website Pender Island Health Care Society
JOB SUMMARY Volunteers are trained through the Canada Revenue Agency’s volunteer tax program to prepare simple tax returns for those on a limited income, helping people access benefits and rebates. Among many other benefits, this service often results in people in need being able to access financial assistance they might otherwise miss out on.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION This is a collaboration between Beacon Community Services (BCS) and Pender Islands Health Care Society (PIHCS). Volunteers register with BCS and low-income seniors sign up for the program through PIHCS. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) has existed since 1971 and is a longstanding partnership between the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and community organizations and their volunteers. Volunteers may meet clients in person at the health centre, or complete taxes through virtual clinics by videoconference, by phone, or through a drop-off clinic.
CRA recommends volunteers register/renew starting the fourth week of October to be ready for tax season. Register early to prevent delays and ensure you don’t miss important information.
Please submit your resume and cover letter by email, in confidence, to the Volunteer Coordinator, volunteer@penderislandhealth.org
WAGES: VOLUNTEER
HOURS: March through May, Process to be agreed upon by Volunteer, PIHCS and BCS.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Although it’s helpful, you don’t need experience doing tax returns to volunteer. All volunteers are offered web-based training on how to do taxes, using tax software, and determining their responsibilities. Online training can be supplemented with in-person training or virtual training sessions. Volunteers will need to sign up through the Canada Revenue Agency and complete a criminal record check. If you are a dedicated and detail-oriented individual passionate about community service, we encourage you to apply.
