The Southern Gulf Islands Community Resource Centre (CRC) has initiated an Edu-Tourism Project designed to help foster educational tourism initiatives on the Southern Gulf Islands.
What is Edu-Tourism?
Edu-tourism refers to programs that encourage participants to experience the unique culture of the location they are visiting. The benefits of place-based learning include:
- Spreading the tourist season away from the summer months and encouraging a sustainable industry
- Developing a knowledge-based economy in which unique expertise is fostered and valued.
- Improving employment opportunities for residents
This project is being piloted on the Penders with the goal of helping the community to steer the tourism industry in an intentional and meaningful way. It is the CRC’s hope that this program’s projects will empower the community to ensure that the Island’s culture shapes the tourism industry, instead of the other way around. As the project takes shape and begins to build its success, it is the CRC’s intention that the project will expand to include other Southern Gulf Islands.
Currently the project is being operated through the SGI Community Resource Centre with the assistance of two part-time project managers.
As part of this project, the CRC has developed a Wellness and Sustainability Advisory Council and an Arts and Adventure Advisory Council. The roles of these councils will be to provide input into the Edu-Tourism Project, as well as other CRC projects.
