The Southern Gulf Islands Community Resource Centre (CRC) has received another award from the Province’s Rural Dividend Fund to extend its Edu-Tourism Project beyond Pender to the other Southern Gulf Islands of Galiano Island, Mayne Island and Saturna Island.
What is Edu-Tourism?
Edu-tourism refers to programs that encourage participants to experience the unique culture of the location they are visiting. The benefits of this place-based learning project include:
- Spreading the tourist season away from the summer months and encouraging a sustainable industry
- Developing a knowledge-based economy in which unique expertise is fostered and valued.
- Improving employment opportunities for residents
The initial project funded in 2017 was entitled “Building Pender Islands Economy through Edu-Tourism”. As indicated this pilot project was based on Pender Island and enabled a number of off-season Educational –Tourism offerings on Pender including a Song Writer’s workshop, a Kayaking course, the Eco Home tour and the launch of the Magic Lakes record label.
The new project is entitled “Building Community, Building Capacity: Inter-Island Sustainability through Educational Tourism”
The SGI Community Resource Centre is presently seeking applicants for a project manager and four island-specific coordinators for this project.
